Police Academy Training Qualifications

To enter into the police force and enroll in police academy training in Utah, all candidates must be at least 21 years old, hold a driver’s license, have a high school diploma or GED, and be a citizen of the United States. Police academies in the state are sponsored by regional police departments and some community colleges, allowing the option for cadets to be sponsored through training or pay their own way. In order to gain admission to a basic training program, you must pass through several types of background checks. Applicants’ medical histories are required to determine if their records are up to date and to ensure that they are fit to serve as a police officer. Vision and hearing tests are conducted as well. There is a series of physical trials required at the start of basic that are designed to eliminate applicants that are unfit to begin training. Criminal backgrounds are also evaluated and any felony will disqualify an applicant from entering police academy training. Finally, financial records are checked to see if the applicant is responsible with their spending. Applicants that have large outstanding debts or bad credit ratings may be turned away.

State universities also offer accredited law enforcement training programs. The most reputable universities for basic training are the Utah Valley University Police Academy in Orem and the Weber State University Police Academy in Ogden. For candidates interested in become a highway patrol officer or state trooper, training can be completed at the Utah State Highway Patrol Training Section in Murray. If you are interested in becoming a correctional officer or jailer, training can be completed at the Fred House of the Utah Department of Corrections Academy in Draper.
