Louisiana Police Training Academy

There are many places to complete police academy training in Louisiana because each parish in the state operates their own training facilities. With almost 12,000 police officers working throughout the state, the police force is very large. The average salary is close to $40,000 per year, but there are a lot of risks that come with it. The types of individuals that are best-suited for the work of a police officer are those that take pride in serving the public and protecting the members of their community. The qualities that define these people are bravery, determination, and compassion. The training process is long and challenging, and especially on the job, every day is a new test.

Qualifications

The Louisiana police force is staffed by individual agencies and sheriff departments, so in order to attend training, cadets must receive an offer of employment from one of these offices. All cadets must be at least 21 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and legally reside in the United States. Extensive background checking is done by recruiters, and criminal backgrounds, financial histories, and medical records are all used to evaluate each individual. The types of criminal charges that will get applicants rejected are violent misdemeanors and drug-related offenses, such as multiple-DUIs or substance abuse, and all felonies. Financial histories are evaluated to root out insolvent or fiscally-irresponsible cadets, with credit scores being a large determinate. For physical health, tests in vision and hearing are conducted. Cadets with health complications will not be allowed to enter into training. This is due to the rigorous physical trials in fields of strength and endurance that each cadet must complete, but also because health issues may prevent an officer from properly performing their job.

Popular Police Academies

There are over a dozen police academies across Louisiana. Cadets most often choose their academy based on location, but the type of training and employment availability may be other major factors. For example, to become a state trooper, cadets must complete their basic training at the Louisiana State Police Training Academy in Baton Rouge. The most popular police academies are based in the New Orleans area. The two main facilities in that region are the Orleans Criminal Sheriff’s Academy and the New Orleans Municipal Training Academy. The Louisiana State University Basic Training Academy is also a very popular option, as cadets enrolled in training can complete their college degrees. This is a very valuable option for individuals that want to take their career in law enforcement to higher ranks, or improve the quality of their work with advanced degrees of criminal justice.
